The Blockage

I've been stuck lately, on the dreaded block that stops me dead every time: big blocks of core troops. I love to paint, but blocks of infantry just dry me up. Right now, I'm working on twenty-four Dark Elf Spearmen. After finishing thirty crossbow foot earlier in the year, I just don't have a lot of heart for it. Perhaps I'll be able to buckle down tomorrow, or the next day, or the next day....

The worst is getting stuck like this really slows my creative juices all the way around. I don't want to write about what I'm doing, make lists, or any of the other things I really enjoy in the hobby. It's getting stuck all the way around.

Anybody else have this problem, or know a good way of working with it? It always passes in time, and I end up muscling through a great many models quickly all of a sudden one afternoon. The flood gates must reopen at some point.

  1. I have this problem all the time, and it's this exact thing that is making me nervous about buying 10 Iron Fangs and the UA. I either lower my standards to get big units done or stay away from them.

  2. Painting troops can be pain at times. I always paint my Core troops first. Get them done before I start on the characters and monsters.

I also paint like an assembly line. One color on every model before starting on the next, not the 5 or 10 that some people do. By doing this when you are done with the basecoast the unit looks done. Not 5 painted and 19 more to go.

I start to really enjoy painting when I have all the basecoats done. Look for shortcuts as well. Be sloppy and paint with a large brush for the first basecoat. It helps to break the ice.

I look forward to seeing them on the battlefield.

  3. I'm considering the strategy of paying someone to do all the basecoating, and then I only have to highlight and ink - all the nitty gritty work that makes it look so cool. Is that cheating? :)
